West Kazakhstan region is located in the western part of the Republic of Kazakhstan and plays the role of the gate to the central and southern regions of the country and the countries of Central Asia.

The territory of the region is 151.1 thousand km2.

Borders with five regions of Russian Federation: Astrakhan, Volgograd, Saratov, Samara, Orenburg and 2 regions of Kazakhstan: Aktobe and Atyrau, connected with them by railways, motorways, water and air transports.

Relief

The relief of the territory is flat. There are branched ridges of Syrt and Ural platos in the northern and north-eastern parts of the region. There are Narynkum dune masses: Kokuzenkum, Akkum, Karagandykum and others within the Precaspian basin in the southern part. The climate is humid continental.

Hydrogeography

The Zhaiyk River (Ural) runs through the territory of the region, which is the major water supplement of the region. There are other large rivers like Saryozen, Karaozen, Kaldygaity, Olenty, Buldyrty, Shyngyrlau. The large lakesin the territory of the region are Shalqar, Aralsor, Botkol, Zhartykol, Sulukol.

Soils

The soil has different colours and types: dark brown, brown, light brown clay and salts. The majority of the vegetations are grassland steppe-type, grass-wormwood type, and sagebrush-type.

The region is rich for the mineral resources. Production of oil and gas is the major energy resource, Karachaganak oilfield is world’s one of the largest fields.

Administrative-territorial division

The center of the region is located in Uralsk.

The permanent population of the region as of April 1, 2018 was 646 089 people, of which 330.4 thousand people live in urban areas, and 313.5 thousand people live in rural areas.

The average population density in the region (per 1 sq. Km of the territory) is 4.0 people.

Uralsk is an administrative, industrial, historical and cultural center of the West Kazakhstan region.

The city was founded in 1613 and is located in the northern part of the Caspian lowland, in a picturesque steppe plain. It is located on the right bank of the middle course of the Ural River, the length of which within the Republic of Kazakhstan is 1082 km, and on the left bank of the lower reaches of the Chagan River.

The territory of the city with suburbs is more than 700 k2.

Industry

Industrial output was produced by KZT 769.0 bn. The index of physical volume was 98.0%, including:

in the mining industry - 688.3 billion tenge, 96.9%;

in the manufacturing sector - 56.6 billion tenge, 117.2%;

in the industry, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning - 21.6 billion tenge, 107.1%;

in the industry, water supply, sewage system, control over the collection and distribution of waste - 2.5 billion tenge, 140.8%.

The volume of gas production was 7041.1 million cubic meters. m, which is 1.1% less than the corresponding period of 2017, gas condensate - 4337.1 thousand tons, or 1.9% less.

The volume of production of oil products amounted to 9289.4 million tenge, which is 17.9% less than the corresponding period in 2017.

The production of gas oils decreased by 63.0%.

The volume of production of finished metal products amounted to 3815.0 million tenge, which is 1.6 times more than the level of the corresponding period of 2017. The production of grinding balls increased by 28.9%.

The volume of production of the metallurgical industry amounted to 7107.7 million tenge, which is 1.6 times more. The production of ribbed sheets of non-alloy steel increased by 56.1%, pipes of different diameters, hollow seamless steel profiles by 1.6 times.

The volume of production of other non-metallic mineral products increased by 51.4% and amounted to 3343.3 million tenge. The production of concrete goods increased 2.8 times, of concrete products - by 4.3%.

In the machine-building industry, the output was 12739.2 million tenge, which is 1.7 times more.

Prices. The overall inflation rate was 102.0% (the republican indicator was 102.2%).

Prices for food products increased by 2.8% (republican index - by 2.8%). The prices for bakery and flour confectionery rose by 1.0%, tobacco products by 1.4%, pasta by 3.3%, alcoholic beverages by 3.6%, meat by 4.3% fish and seafood - by 6.8%, fruits and vegetables - by 8.0%, potatoes - by 10.8%. The prices for sunflower oil went down by 1.2%, black tea - by 8.5%, buckwheat - by 16%.

The index of prices for non-food products amounted to 101.7% (republican index - 101.7%). The prices for clothing and footwear, pharmaceutical products by 1.7%, washing and cleaning products by 1.8%, other items, appliances and personal care products by 3.1%, newspapers and periodicals by 2.5% increased %, solid fuel - by 2.6%, cars - by 4.4%. Gasoline went up by 0.8%, diesel fuel - by 0.9%.

Prices and tariffs for paid services amounted to 101.2% (republican index - 101.9%). The services of preschool institutions went up by 2.5%, rent for housing - by 3.4%, the tariff for gas transported by distribution networks - by 3.6%, hairdressing and beauty salons - by 3.8%, postal services - by 4.3%, housing costs - by 5.2%, legal services and insurance services - by 6.0%, outpatient services - by 7.4%. Rail passenger transport services rose 1.0%, passenger air transport services fell 6.7%.

Small and medium enterprises

As of May 1, 2018, the number of operating entities in the sphere of small and medium business amounted to 38.7 thousand units, which is 4.4% more than the corresponding period of 2017.

As of January 1, 2018, the number of employed in small and medium-sized businesses is 112.9 thousand people, which is 5.6% more than on January 1, 2017.

The subjects of small and medium-sized business in January-December 2017 produced goods (works and services) by KZT1404.9 billion or 102.8% against the corresponding period of 2016.

In 2018, under the Unified Program "Business Road Map 2020", 1618.7 million tenge is provided for the support of private entrepreneurship, including 1 477.7 million tenge for subsidizing the interest rate for loans, and a partial guarantee of 94.0 million ., tenge, grant financing - 47.0 million tenge.

The Regional Coordination Council of the West Kazakhstan region approved 13 projects worth 1.1 billion tenge in January-April 2018.

The local budget received 30.0 billion tenge (138.5% of the forecast), which is an increase of 11.7%.

The tax arrears as compared to January 1, 2018 (including past years) increased by KZT 874.6 million and amounted to KZT 4,515.0 million, including KZT 3537.8 million on the republican budget (by 472, 4 million tenge more), local - 977.3 million tenge (by 402.2 million tenge more).

Labor market. As of May 1, 2018, 6114 people are registered with employment agencies, the share of registered unemployed in the economically active population was 1.8%, which is 2.0 percentage points higher than the level of the corresponding period of 2017.

As of May 1, 2018, 2547 jobs were created, including 551 in agriculture, forestry and fisheries, 14 in industry, 368 in construction, 114 in transport and storage, wholesale and retail trade, repair of cars and motorcycles - 156, education - 292, health and social services - 64, other types of economic activity - 290, temporary and seasonal - 608. Culture and sport.
